A day after senior US and Ukrainian officials met in Geneva to review Washington’s proposal to end the war in Ukraine, US President Donald Trump suggested that “something good” may be underway.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Is it really possible that big progress is being made in Peace Talks between Russia and Ukraine??? Don’t believe it until you see it, but something good just may be happening.”
His remarks come ahead of the November 27 deadline he set for Ukraine to respond to the US-backed 28-point peace plan.
The draft, revised during Monday’s meeting, reportedly includes some points proposed by Kyiv. Ukrainian officials also met US secretary of state Marco Rubio to assess whether the plan could be viable.
The initial proposal asked Ukraine to cede territory, scale back its military and stay out of NATO – conditions Kyiv had rejected.
In their counter-plan, Ukraine and its European partners insisted that any discussion on territorial concessions could begin only after hostilities cease along the current line of contact, Bloomberg reported.
Trump’s latest optimism follows his criticism of Ukraine’s leadership for showing “zero gratitude”. Hours later, President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed thanks for US support, saying American assistance had “been saving Ukrainian lives.”
