The Ministry of External Affairs(MEA) on Friday rejected NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte’s claim of a purported phone conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling it “factually incorrect and entirely baseless.”
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, addressing the weekly press briefing, said, “At no point has Prime Minister Modi spoken with President Putin in the manner suggested. No such conversation has taken place.”
He urged NATO leadership to “exercise greater responsibility and accuracy” in its public remarks, warning against “speculative or careless statements” that misrepresent India’s diplomatic engagements.
Reiterating India’s stance on energy imports, Jaiswal stressed that the country’s oil purchases are guided by national interest and affordability for consumers.
“India will continue to take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security,” he said. The clarification comes amid heightened scrutiny of India’s energy trade with Russia.
