The India Meteorological Department (IMD) will launch Phase II of Mission Mausam by April, aiming to make India weather-ready and climate-smart through a major upgrade of its observational infrastructure.
Announcing this on IMD’s 151st Foundation Day, Earth Sciences Ministry Secretary M Ravichandran said the new phase will see the installation of 200 additional automatic weather stations (AWSs) and improvements in land and ocean-based observation systems.
The rollout will begin this month with 20 AWSs in Delhi, followed by installations in key cities such as Mumbai and Chennai.
The expansion is expected to significantly improve forecasting of extreme rainfall and highly localised weather events, which are becoming more frequent due to changing climate patterns.
Under Mission Mausam Phase I, the IMD expanded its Doppler weather radar network to 46 and introduced the Bharat Forecasting System, a high-resolution global numerical model providing forecasts up to the panchayat level.
These initiatives strengthened early warning systems and enhanced preparedness for extreme weather events across the country.
