Pakistani authorities have initiated the process to deport Sarabjeet Kaur, a woman from Punjab who went missing during a Sikh pilgrimage to Pakistan in November and later married a local man after converting to Islam.
Kaur had travelled to Pakistan as part of a Sikh jatha to mark the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev at Nankana Sahib but did not return with the group.
She later surfaced in Pakistan’s Sheikhupura district, where she married Nasir Hussain after embracing Islam and reportedly changed her name to Noor Hussain.
Pakistani police said a joint team of the Intelligence Bureau and local authorities arrested Kaur and Hussain, following which deportation proceedings were initiated. She is expected to be handed over to Indian authorities at the Attari-Wagah check post on Monday evening.
Earlier, the couple had approached the Lahore High Court, claiming police harassment, with Kaur stating she had married Hussain of her own free will.
