United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday called for immediate negotiations over the acquisition of Greenland, saying no country was better placed than America to take control of the strategically located territory.
Addressing the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Trump said the United States would not use military force to pursue the takeover but argued that Greenland remains “undefended” despite its importance. He described the island as lying in a key strategic corridor between the US, Russia and China.
Amid growing tensions over Greenland’s future, the US President said America’s interest was driven by national and international security considerations rather than access to mineral resources.
During his speech, Trump also renewed criticism of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), claiming the US was “treated very unfairly” by the military alliance. “We give so much and get so little in return,” he said, while adding that although he had been critical of NATO, he had done “more than” the previous Joe Biden administration for the bloc.
Trump’s remarks are expected to further strain ties with European allies already uneasy over Washington’s stance on Greenland.
