UK PM Keir Starmer says India-UK trade deal offers stability amid US tariffs

Answering questions on how the India-UK trade deal could help counter the impact of US tariffs on both economies, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the agreement represents a major step toward providing stability and confidence in an uncertain global trade environment.

Starmer noted that while the deal is yet to be fully implemented, it has already “opened up new opportunities,” citing 10,600 jobs created during his delegation’s visit to India.

Recent US tariff measures have affected exports from both the UK and India, particularly in technology, steel, and automobile sectors.

The comprehensive trade pact between London and New Delhi aims to reduce trade barriers, diversify supply chains, and foster investment-led growth that could offset the effects of American protectionist policies.

Starmer emphasized that both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and he view the agreement as a sign of resilience between “two great democracies.”

He added that businesses, cultural institutions, and universities have already begun benefiting from the “new spirit” of collaboration.

As the trade deal moves toward full implementation, it is expected to strengthen bilateral trade, create jobs, and offer economic stability amid the ongoing global tariff tensions.
