Gyanesh Kumar asserts constitutional duty as ECI launches phase-II of SIR

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar on Monday reaffirmed that every constitutional body must “fulfil its responsibility under the Constitution.”

This statement came amid the West Bengal government’s pushback against the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) Special Intensive Revision(SIR) exercise.

Addressing a press conference, Kumar emphasized that the ECI’s work is guided by constitutional obligations, not political considerations.

“Under the Constitution, every Constitutional body has to fulfil their responsibility,” he said, underscoring the EC’s independence.

The Commission also announced the second phase of the SIR exercise, which will be conducted across 12 states and Union Territories, including West Bengal

The SIR aims to update and verify voter rolls to ensure transparency and accuracy ahead of upcoming elections.
