TMC’s Partha Chatterjee released on bail after 3 years in custody

On Monday, former West Bengal education and industry minister Partha Chatterjee was released on bail, three years after his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the school jobs and recruitment scam.

Chatterjee was a Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA from Behala West and was under judicial custody since July 2022. He was admitted to a private hospital earlier this year due to kidney and heart ailments.

Chatterjee’s release came after the completion of witness examinations before a trial court on Monday in connected cases being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The Calcutta high court had granted him bail in September, directing him to surrender his passport and remain within the Alipore court’s jurisdiction.

Chatterjee, a long-time TMC leader and former education minister, was arrested alongside his aide Arpita Mukherjee, with the ED claiming to have seized ₹103 crore in cash and assets linked to the duo. The high-profile case continues to be under trial.
