A Hindu youth was allegedly lynched in Bangladesh’s Rajbari district, marking another incident of mob violence amid heightened tensions in the country.
The victim, identified as Amrit Mondal, also known as Samrat, was beaten to death in Pangsha upazila on Wednesday night, local reports said.
The attack reportedly followed an allegation of extortion, after which a group of locals assaulted him. Police are yet to issue a detailed statement on the incident.
The killing comes days after the death of 27-year-old Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh district, who was allegedly beaten by a mob, tied to a tree and set on fire during unrest that followed the death of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi.
Violence has been reported in several parts of Bangladesh since Hadi’s death, with protests, attacks on properties and growing concerns over minority safety.
Amrit’s death coincided with the return of BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman to Bangladesh after 17 years in exile, drawing large crowds and renewed political activity.
