The Union home ministry has granted sanction to Assam Police to move forward with legal proceedings against the seven accused arrested in connection with the suspicious death of Assamese cultural icon Zubeen Garg, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday.
The approval, he noted, is a crucial legal requirement under Section 208 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which mandates central clearance for cases involving crimes committed outside India.
Garg died on September 19 while swimming in Singapore, where he had travelled for a cultural programme.
A 10-memberspecial investigation team (SIT) of the Assam CID is probing the case as a suspected murder and has interrogated over 160 people so far.
Those arrested include the event organiser, Garg’s manager, a cousin who is a police officer, two bandmates and two security personnel from Assam Police.
Even as the investigation progresses, Assam celebrated Garg’s 53rd birth anniversary with deep emotion and statewide participation.
Cultural programmes, mass singing events, blood donation camps and cycle rallies were organised across Assam and parts of the Northeast to honour the legacy of the beloved singer, filmmaker and poet whose influence continues to resonate widely.
