Chaos marked the start of the Winter Session on Tuesday as Opposition parties demanded that the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls be taken up immediately.
TMC’s Derek O’Brien claimed “people are dying because of SIR,” as members staged a walkout in the Rajya Sabha, insisting the issue be prioritised.
Government Refuses to Follow Fixed Deadlines
Parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju said the government is open to discussing SIR but will not accept timelines set by the Opposition.
He maintained that the scheduled Vande Mataram discussion linked to the freedom struggle would proceed first. Rijiju told Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge not to “put timeline condition on anything,” adding that consultations would be held before taking up the matter.
Protests Disrupt Lok Sabha Too
The Lok Sabha was adjourned after Congress and other Opposition MPs protested, demanding the debate. The Opposition has criticised the Election Commission’s handling of the SIR exercise, while the poll body has extended the schedule by a week to ensure “full transparency.”
Electoral reforms to be discussed on 9th-10th December in Lok Sabha. Vande Mataram to be discussed in the House on 8th December, ANI reported.
For now Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha proceedings have been suspended until 11 am on December 3.
