At least six police personnel were injured on Friday evening after a mob attacked them in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali area of North 24 Parganas while they were detaining a Trinamool Congress (TMC) activist.
Police said the team from Nazat police station had gone to Boyemari village to apprehend Musa Mollah for allegedly violating court orders by pumping water into a land parcel to convert it into a fish farm. When Mollah was detained, a mob gathered and began pelting stones at the police.
The attackers also damaged a police vehicle and briefly held the personnel captive, allowing Mollah to flee before reinforcements arrived to rescue the injured officers.
Nine people have been arrested so far, while local panchayat leaders are being questioned.
The incident has revived memories of the Sandeshkhali unrest in 2024, when allegations of land grabbing and abuse against TMC strongman Sheikh Shahjahan triggered protests and a subsequent CBI probe.
