India has called on the international community to hold Pakistan accountable for its “horrific human rights violations” in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
During his weekly media briefing on Thursday,MEA spokesperson RandhirJaiswal said the growing unrest in the region is a “natural consequence of Pakistan’s oppressive approach and systemic plundering of resources.”
He also mentioned seeing reports of brutalities by Pakistani forces or innocent civilians. Randhir said that Pakistan must be held accountable for its horrific human rights violations.
Widespread protests across PoK
For over a week, mass protests have rocked PoK, with thousands taking to the streets in Rawalakot, Mirpur, Kotli, Neelum Valley, and other areas.
The demonstrations, led by the Awami Action Committee (AAC), have been described as the largest the region has seen in years.
At least 10 people have been killed amid clashes, while authorities have suspended internet and mobile services to contain the uprising.
Demands of the protesters
The AAC protests are centred on the denial of fundamental rights and long-standing grievances against Islamabad.
Protesters are demanding the abolition of 12 reserved legislative seats in the PoK assembly for Kashmiri refugees living in Pakistan, arguing that the provision undermines the political representation of locals.
The agitation highlights growing anger over decades of political marginalisation and economic exploitation under Pakistani control.
