West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee calls SIR ‘votebandi’

On Monday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, once again launched a sharp attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI) over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral roll.

She called the process “votebandi” and alleged that it amounts to an “emergency”. Comparing SIR with demonetisation, Banerjee said, “Demonetisation was notebandi, and SIR is notebandi.”

Earlier, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief accused ECI of rushing the voter revision process to deliberately target West Bengal.

She has also questioned the rapid implementation of SIR, noting that the process, which earlier took two years or more, was being forced through in just a few months.

Mamata also alleged that eligible voters were being unfairly removed from the rolls, terming the exercise politically motivated.
