BLO found dead in West Bengal amid SIR, CM Mamata reacts

A 52-year old Booth Level Officer (BLO) was found dead on Saturday in West Bengal’s Nadia district amid the ongoing Special Intensive Revision(SIR) in the state.

The BLO, identified as Rinku Tarafdar, a para-teacher at Vivekananda Vidyamandir, was found hanging in her home in Bangaljhi, Chapra. Her family has alleged that she had been under severe stress due to the ongoing SIR workload.

Police recovered a suicide note in which Tarafdar allegedly blamed the Election Commission of India (ECI) for the pressure she was facing.

“I want to live. My family lacks nothing. But for this modest job, they pushed me to such humiliation that I was left with no choice but to die,” the note reportedly said.

A police officer confirmed that her body has been sent for postmortem and a probe is underway.

The incident has triggered strong reactions across the state, including from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who termed the situation “truly alarming”.

Responding to the incident, Banerjee wrote on X, “Profoundly shocked to know of the death of yet another BLO… How many more lives will be lost? How many more need to die for this SIR?”

The Chief Minister had earlier written to the ECI, urging them to halt the SIR process amid rising concerns over BLO workload and safety.
