Supreme Court agrees to hear Kerala’s plea to defer SIR next week

The Supreme Court on Friday, has agreed to hear the Kerala government’s urgent plea seeking to defer the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The Supreme Court decided to hear the urgent plea considering a potential administrative deadlock as the process overlaps with upcoming local body elections.

A bench of Justices Surya Kant, SVN Bhatti, and Joymalya Bagchi issued notices to the Election Commission of India (ECI) and others on fresh petitions challenging the ongoing SIR in Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, and Puducherry.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Kerala, told the court that the state faces severe logistical constraints, with local body elections scheduled for December 9 and 11 and constitutional deadlines requiring completion by December 21.

The state noted that over 176,000 polling personnel and 68,000 security staff are already committed to the polls, while the SIR demands an additional 25,668 trained officials, an arrangement the government described as “near impossible.”

The bench, however, said only Kerala’s plea would be taken up on November 26, while challenges from Uttar Pradesh and Puducherry would be heard in December.

Political parties including the Congress, IUML, and CPI(M) have also moved petitions against the SIR in multiple states.
