Over rising tensions in Bangladesh, members of a Hindu organisation and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held protests near several land ports across West Bengal.
The movie behind protests was to condemn alleged atrocities against minorities in neighbouring Bangladesh following the lynching of a Hindu man in Mymesingh district.
Demonstrations were organised near the Petrapole integrated check post, Ghojadanga land port in North 24 Parganas, Manoharpur Muchia in Malda, and Changrabandha in Cooch Behar, a PTI report said.
Protesters alleged that Hindus were being targeted and their properties looted in Bangladesh. The agitation near Petrapole was stopped by the Border Security Force near the zero point.
BJP activists also staged a protest at the Alipore court premises when 19 people arrested during Tuesday’s demonstration near the Bangladesh deputy high commission were produced before a magistrate.
Minor scuffles were reported near Howrah Bridge as police blocked protesters.
The protests followed the December 18 lynching of 25-year-old Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district. Trade operations at land ports remained unaffected, officials said.
