Mamata Banerjee blames BJP for suicide linked to SIR exercise

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday intensified her attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after a 95-year-old man in Birbhum allegedly died by suicide, with his family claiming he feared losing his land and property under the special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral roll.

The man’s granddaughter said he panicked after learning his name did not appear in the 2002 voters’ list. This marks the second reported suicide linked to the ongoing exercise.

In a post on X, Banerjee said the latest incident, along with earlier cases from North 24 Parganas and Cooch Behar, reflected a “fear psychosis” created by the BJP.

“Who will answer for these avoidable, politically inflicted tragedies?” she asked, demanding accountability from the Centre.

Police said the Birbhum resident’s body was found hanging in his home. Neighbours stated he migrated from Bangladesh around three decades ago.

The BJP rejected Banerjee’s allegations, accusing her of “lying to create panic.”

Former state party chief Rahul Sinha claimed the death may have stemmed from a family or financial issue, while BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya said the man was already protected under the Citizenship Amendment Act.
